The Price of War, The Gift of Peace: A Photographic Journey Through Sudan

The United Nations commissioned the photographs in this book with a simple but powerful mandate:

"Travel to every corner of Sudan and, in three weeks, portray both the price of war and the gift of peace."

This extraordinary documentary photography project became a journey through one of Africa's most complex and resilient nations. One of the greatest challenges was navigating the severe restrictions surrounding photography in Sudan, where every region and community has its own rules, sensitivities, and cultural considerations regarding cameras and foreign visitors.

Upon arriving in each community, we often encountered suspicion and apprehension. Decades of conflict and civil war had left deep emotional scars, causing many people to question our intentions and wonder why we had come.

Everything changed when we explained our mission.

"I have been asked to photograph the price that war has exacted on your lives."

Those words opened doors.

The fear and uncertainty gave way to trust. Faces marked by hardship suddenly lit up with smiles. Men, women, and children wanted to share their stories and show us the realities of their lives. They insisted that more photographs be taken, eager to ensure that their experiences—their suffering, resilience, and hope—would not be forgotten.

This collection of images is more than a photographic record of Sudan. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit and a powerful reminder that behind every conflict are real people whose stories deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.
